You can judge a city by its coffee, and Wichita is doing just fine. From Turkish coffee thick enough to stand a spoon in at N & J Cafe to a banana split latte at GROW Plant Bar that nearly made me cry, this list runs the full chaotic range.

I've logged the hours, burned my tongue, and bought way too many handmade mugs, so you don't have to. (My therapist says that's called "research.

") Here's where to caffeinate, loaf, and pretend to work.

Fantastic, welcoming staff
Black and veteran owned

I walked into Greater Grounds and immediately felt like I'd been missing out. The coffee is world-class, no argument there. Their famous chicken salad sandwich lives up to the hype, which is rare around here. I tried a creative drink and a pastry, both were solid. The staff actually seemed happy to see me, which is suspicious but welcome. This is a Black and veteran owned spot, and they deserve your money. If you're in Wichita and want a coffee that doesn't taste like dirty water, go here. Just don't tell everyone, or the line will get worse.

Unique Mothman Mocha
Fluffy lemon-blueberry pastry
Lovely owners, nice patio

Paranormal.Cafe is weird in the best way. I ordered the Mothman Mocha because how could I not? It's oddly delicious. The pumpkin cake was the best I've ever had, and I don't even like pumpkin. Also, the lemon-blueberry pastry was fluffy enough to float away. Prices are reasonable, which is refreshing. The owners are lovely, and the patio is perfect for people-watching. If you want a coffee that's a little quirky but still serious about quality, this is your spot. Just don't expect a normal experience. That's the point.

Pennant Coffee has the best coffee in Wichita. I said it. The ube and matcha drinks are killer. I had a matcha latte that tasted like a dream, and the ube was a vibrant purple disaster of delight. The handmade mugs from a local artist are beautiful, so I bought one. The music was great, not annoying. The folks working there are friendly. It costs more than your average cup, but it's worth it. If you're cheap, go somewhere else. If you appreciate good beans, pay up.

GROW Plant Bar is a plant lover's paradise, and I'm not even a plant person. The banana split coffee is perfection in a cup. I ordered it and nearly cried. They also have a make-your-own plant bar, which is exactly what it sounds like. You can get cocktails alongside your coffee, so it's basically a bar for adults who like caffeine. The staff is exceptionally helpful, even when I asked dumb questions about ferns. If you like trouble, err, plants, this is a fun stop. Just don't forget your wallet.

The matcha is great, and pastries are solid. Service is fast and friendly, even when I'm not fully awake. They roast their own beans, so you know it's fresh. I got a latte and a croissant, and I was out the door in minutes. If you need a quick, quality coffee fix, this is the place. No fuss, just good.

Milkfloat is like stepping into an autumn Pinterest board, but in a good way. The apple pastry is killer, and the ice cream is even better. Their coffee is strong, which I appreciate. The desserts are better than the coffee, honestly. They have local art and merch for sale, so I bought a sticker. Plenty of seating, and parking is easy. This is the spot to cozy up with a book and ignore your responsibilities. I stayed for two hours. No regrets.

Artichoke Sandwichbar in Midtown makes the best sandwiches in Wichita. I've had them all, don't @ me. The Number 8 is famous for a reason, and it shines. Bacon was cooked perfectly crisp, which is non-negotiable. The broccoli salad surprised me, it was actually great. Service was fast, and the atmosphere is cozy, like a hug from a deli. If you're not in the mood for coffee, this is still a solid stop. But get the sandwich and a coffee. You'll thank me.

The art is intersensory, so you can interact with it. Great photo spot, if you're into that. It's a public hangout space, so you can bring friends or strangers. They even have art accessible for visually impaired folks, which is cool. If you want a coffee with a side of existential wonder, go here. Just watch out for the spiders.

Central Standard Brewing is a brewery, but they have coffee, so I'm including it. The seating areas are comfortable and homey, like a weird uncle's basement. Tuesday live music nights are a blast. The house-made beer is top-notch, and the homemade kombucha is refreshing. The staff is great, especially for private events. I had a coffee and a beer, because I'm an adult. If you want a relaxed place to drink something, this is it. Don't expect a typical coffee shop, but expect good times.

Downtown Nutrition Protein & Energy Bar is a place I stumbled into, and I'm glad I did. The staff is friendly, and the vegan shakes are tasty. I had one, and it was surprisingly filling. It lasted me a few hours, which is rare. They have lots of smoothies and teas, so you can mix it up. If you're looking for a healthy alternative to coffee, or just a coffee with benefits, this is a good stop. It's not your average coffee shop, but it works. Try the shakes, they're worth it.

The service is top-notch, and I felt genuinely welcomed. They also have rare Mediterranean market goods, so I bought some spices. This was a spontaneous walk, and I didn't regret it.
